Hygge (noun) (Pronounced: Hoo-gah) …A quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. The Danish concept encompasses both physical & emotional wellness, along with being around people you love in a cozy environment.
When my sister and I were kids, we would take turns bossing each other around (ok, I did most of the bossing, sorry Sus!) and we would insist often that the other make a comfy spot for one to lay in. This would consist of many pillows from all parts of the house, the softest blanket, a drink delivered, and tucking in to said blankets and pillows beneath the wood beamed ceiling of our cabin-like home.
To be the one who was in the comfy spot was bliss: cozy contentedness and being doted on by someone. In hindsight, we just enjoyed being comfy, and it was nice when someone else provided the cozy for us. If one of us wronged the other, the only way to stop her from telling our Mom was the pitch of: ‘oh come on! I’ll make you a comfy spot!!’ And all was forgotten, and Mom never was to find out…
In hindsight, it was the feeling of being tucked in and comfortable, cared for by another, that we each enjoyed: that we all enjoy. Who doesn’t love the words: spa-like master bath, cozy breakfast nook, refreshing pool. All of these represent places where comfort, calm and happiness is possible and likely.
