I was raised in Waimea on the Big Island and graduated from Honokaa high school. I started my career in Real Estate at the age of 20, working for a local mortgage broker here in town. Starting as a temporary receptionist, I was quickly hired full time and learned the entire mortgage business from origination to closing. I loved helping families build their dream homes and specialized in land and construction loans. I built my first home at the age of 22 and another at age 26. After the market crashed in 2009, I shifted gears and started my own cleaning company, cleaning vacation rentals in the Puako area. After working with the property managers, handymen, landscapers, guests and homeowners, it organically happened that I started to manage my own vacation rentals. In 2017, I decided to get my real estate sales license and bring all my experience together. I've found my knowledge and background has helped me provide high quality service to my clientele. I raised two beautiful children here, where we all enjoy paddling for Kawaihae Canoe Club. I love the ocean and all it provides. I was one of the first agents to join Hawaii Life on the Big Island in 2009. After just one conversation with the founders, I knew Iʻd just seen the future of real estate, a future that was customer-oriented rather than agent-oriented. I represent both buyers and sellers of first-class Big Island properties, from the Kohala Coast resorts to upcountry ranches and horse properties. Additionally, I was named Broker-in-Charge in 2015. In 2018 I was asked to become Hawaii Lifeʻs Director of Conservation and Legacy Lands. In this position I lead the firmʻs efforts as a resource for owners and sellers of properties with conservation values state-wide. The goal is to generate awareness for the role that conservation plays in Hawai’i's future and leverage the Hawaii Life platform on behalf of conservation-minded sellers and buyers of real estate. I serve on the State Legacy Land Conservation Commission and as a Board member of Hawaiʻi Land Trust and the Kohala Community Land Trust. I bring a unique skill set to the leadership roles. After receiving a B.A. degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Ph.D. in Economics from Colorado School of Mines, I spent more than a decade working around the world as a Wall Street banker. I then ran consulting and leadership development businesses prior to my real estate career. All these roles present a wonderful challenge for someone with an analytical mind and a love of the outdoors. One day I might be found watching whales frolic from an oceanfront resort listing and the next Iʻm driving off-road across a large ranch acreage with views of snow-capped Mauna Kea. It was only a matter of time before she wanted to join the “family business” and now we benefit from her deep knowledge and insight as someone who has grown up on the Big Island and knows it inside and out. My personal knowledge of the Big Island real estate market spans from private golf course communities to beachfront homes, from vacation resort properties to year-round estates. Today, my real estate focus is on condos, homes in private communities, and the luxury resort market. I especially enjoy putting the hard to fit transactions together. I love my job, as an admitted property junkie, I think my calling has always been Real Estate! Having a strong work ethic, helps my creative side, which is always on the hunt for an opportunity to make something from nothing, perhaps taking that fixer to a fresh new start or just a face lift on any home. My job is the best in the world, I have the opportunity to meet people, take the time to get to know them and what is important in their search for a new home, business or investment, it really does not get better than that! I found my life long career when I was 30 years old and now have over 38 years of searching, prodding and designing along with my clients to find the perfect fit! My past experiences have shaped me and given me knowledge that I can share with my clients. As the Sales Manger of The Cloisters, in Morro Bay, California , I also had the pleasure of selecting all the finishes, from floors to roofs for 40 homes. With this position, came a lot of responsibility and interaction with the builders and subs, not for the meek and mild gal, you had to get in and make it happen. I learned how things actually have to be designed and built, not just what looked good. I think being able to recognize good quality workmanship has helped me in so many ways, it really is the highlight of my experiences. My third grade teacher wrote a note to my parents on my report card, it said, " Jan is the most tenacious child I have ever met", which at the time, may not have been all good, but it serves me and my clients well, today. My new husband, Johnny and I just completed designing and building our dream home in Puako, which has been the most fun project to date...everyday we wake up and pinch ourselves, that it is real and we did it! Every evening, we walk across to the sand to watch sunset and pinch ourselves again, we are so blessed. My favorite pass time, body boarding, is at my doorstep in beautiful Pauko, the best kept secret in Hawaii, by the way. Combining a lifestyle of work and play, is absolutely heaven on earth!
