I would suggest meeting with potential agents just to get a "feel" for how they will work for you. My wife and I met with Diane after having bad experiences with other agents and wished I had met her two years earlier. Diane did not "handle" us. She was honest and direct. Our situation was not good and she told us so. But she also accomplished more than every other real estate agent that I worked with and she stuck with us and sold our house!
Knowing Diane for a few years I knew she was the right person for the realtor job for us. Moving from the city to the suburbs she helped answer a lot of question my wife and i had. I think we had quite a bit of "must haves" as well as a lot of undecided things that she was great at narrowing down and pinpointing.
