A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Rod spent more than 25 years in the communications and public relations field. He earned his bachelor of journalism degree at UT and was president of the UT chapter of Sigma Delta Chi and a member of Sigma Delta Phi. His senior year he was named a Goodfellow by the Cactus yearbook. Rod worked two years as a reporter for United Press and is a nationally known education writer and consultant.
