About this property

It's easy to be entranced by the grace and beauty of GlenIlse, a magnificent estate property with a rich and storied history. Set on 6.8 private acres with an elegant Main House, spring-fed pool, spring house, and tennis court, GlenIlse could be your own special retreat and oasis. The Main House was built in 1937 for the Winsor sisters, members of a prominent Main Line family and heirs to a steamship fortune. The Winsor sisters were known for their grand galas, including one rumored to have had members of the Philadelphia Orchestra performing on the upstairs deck of the house! In 1942, Charles E Hires, Jr. and his wife Ilse purchased the home from the Winsor sisters. (Charles Hires, Jr. was one of five children of Charles Elmer Hires, who created the well-known Hires Root Beer.) The Hires family gave the property its name, GlenIlse: glen, referring to the valley with the stream on the north side of the property, and Ilse, the matriarch of the family. GlenIlse expanded over time to include 77 acres and remained in the Hires family for 3 generations before the acreage was subdivided into 8 parcels and sold. In 2014, the current owners purchased the original estate home from the Hires family and embarked on an extensive 18-month renovation with renowned local architect Ann Ledger. The project included updated systems throughout (extensive HVAC work, a new grand manor roof and copper gutters, insulation, and more). The project also included reconfiguration and renovation of existing living spaces, plus the addition of new living spaces bringing modern functionality to this ?grand dame?. A new gourmet kitchen and family room were added, with a vaulted ceiling and stunning two-story wall of windows. The new kitchen and family room were strategically added on the south side of the home to take advantage of natural light from southern exposure, and expansive views of the property. A bank of french-style doors from the family room created easy indoor-outdoor flow to the newly renovated covered patio (with mahogany ceiling). No detail was overlooked inside or out - the gas fire-pit was built using stones from the home?s original bell tower! When the project was complete, this exceptional home featured a modern floor-plan with 5 bedrooms (including a reconfigured primary suite, and a new in-law/ nanny/ guest suite over the garage), 4 full baths and 2 powder rooms (all renovated!), a new second floor laundry room, a new mudroom, an expanded 3 bay garage (with space for a utility vehicle) - and even a doggie-wash station! (A more complete list of renovations is available.) Featured on the Tredyffrin historic house tour in 2017, the property later suffered two flooding events (one in 2018 and then in 2021 during Hurricane Ida) when the mountain stream clogged with trees, boulders and debris, overflowed the culvert, flooding the basement and first floor of the Main House. After the 2018 flooding, the current owners initiated comprehensive engineering plans to widen the stream, expand the culvert capacity, and increase the protective barrier. Environmental surveys were completed, plans were permitted, and an excavation bid was received in the summer of 2021. Unfortunately, Hurricane Ida occurred before the plan was fully implemented. Some, permitted, temporary mediations of the stream have been completed. Professional clean-out and limited remediation were recently completed to bring the house to its current condition. The second floor was not flooded, providing a glimpse of what was and what could be again. Plans for mediation of the stream and additional documentation are available. This property is being sold "As Is'' - offering a rare opportunity to purchase an estate property on over 6 acres in Tredyffrin Township. With a rich history and the chance to renovate to reflect your own personal style, this stunning property awaits a new steward. Will you be the one to write the next chapter in the history of GlenIlse?
