About this property

Originally the old Methodist parsonage, this rambling 19th-century house is an important part of Winterville history, featured in "Winterville, Georgia: A Classic Railroad Town" (http://www.historyofwinterville.com). In recent years, it has been known as the Ethel Chambers House, after the Winterville citizen who owned it for decades. The house is full of character and warmth, with many unique features. For instance, the rafters over the back kitchen, the original part of house, are not hewn lumber, but actual small-diameter tree trunks. Architectural historians have crawled around the attic looking for clues to its construction date, which is estimated at sometime during the 1870s. Floors throughout are hardwood and heart pine. The floors in several rooms have been recently restored and refinished. The ceilings soar at 12 feet. Four of the original fireplaces were coal burning and are no longer functional, and two are wood-burning. The east living room contains a working, period wood-burning stove, helping to keep the room warm in winter. All six fireplaces have lovely, original hearths and mantles. The expansive front yard offers a welcome buffer from the street and has been completely contained by a 250' white picket fence, custom built of individually cut pickets, double primed and double topcoated by hand. Currently the house is laid out as two wings with separate entrances, baths, and gas and electric utilities. This arrangement, which was grandfathered in from years ago, makes the house much more affordable for a young couple or single buyer, who can live in one part of the house and use the other wing as an income property. The separate unit could also be used as an in-law suite, or as additional living space for a single family: converting the house back to a single space is a just a matter of opening the doors that connect the two wings. A new metal roof was installed in late 2015, by an artisan roofer who specializes in old houses. The exterior was repainted in early 2015. The recently rebuilt screened porch looks out onto a shady backyard filled with 100-year-old oaks and pecan, dogwoods, and redbuds. You can also find a mulberry, two chestnut trees, producing plum and fig trees, blackberries, and a large trellis of scuppernong grapes. Roses, azaleas, and gardenias add a floral touch during most seasons. Across the street you'll find summer outdoor music concerts, a Christmas festival, and the annual Marigold festival. Historic Winterville offers the benefits of Athens's Boulevard district at a fraction of the cost. With a spacious lot--almost 1 acre--and close proximity to lively Athens, this jewel of a house provides a perfect combination of privacy, convenience, and historic character.
