Overview

Built before the United States was a country, the Benjamin Coit House stands as one of Griswold's most historically significant properties. This 1700's home was used as the town almshouse in the 19th and 20th centuries, it retains a strong sense of its past with wide-board floors, six fireplaces, and historic pieces everywhere you look. There is even a large kitchen hearth with two beehive ovens and hand-hewn beams throughout. Set up in two sections, the home functions as both a spacious main house and a fully outfitted adjoining unit (each with its own kitchen, full bath, living room and bedrooms). This configuration makes it ideal for in-law living, extended family, or even a potential B&B (town approval needed). Recent updates make the property more functional while preserving its historic charm. There are two new forced hot air furnaces, two new water heaters, and two wood stoves. Nearly every window has been reglazed, the plumbing has been updated and a 2022 drilled well supports the home's modern systems. Additional features include a 3-car garage with a huge workshop, another outbuilding, and a large level lot. Slanted floors, crooked doors, and uneven plaster walls remind you that this house has stood for over 300 years offering character that can't be recreated and durability that has proven to stand the test of time. This remarkable home is a rare opportunity, rich with New England history and updated for today's practical needs, but ready for your touches.
